If you do not have the item in question, chances are you encountered this puzzle without the A Bird in the Hand side quest. The pedestal will then cast a long shadow which will cause the symbols on the ground to light up if it connects into one. Once you activate the pedestal, the orbs at the top of the pillars will shine a light on the pedestal.
To start the "light and darkness" puzzle, insert the Scholar's Moonstone in the pedestal in the middle of the puzzle circle. Head into the courtyard in the next room to start a fight, then open the door on the far side of the room once it's over to discover the end of the quest.How to Solve Light and Darkness Puzzle Insert the Scholar's Moonstone in the Pedestal Return it to the icey circle on the ground, then cast Glacius on it, and Incendio or Confringo on the fiery one to open the way. Use Wingardium Leviosa on the crate and move it to the right side of the room, then use Leviosa on it to raise it and climb up to the second level, where you'll find a metal cube with a purple glow. Use Accio on it and place it on the fiery metal circle on the ground. Run towards the brown box on the left, then turn left again to find a metal cube on a shelf. Use Diffindo or Confringo to clear them out, then run to the far end and turn left. Move through the ruins and take a right to find a tree and a bunch of branches barring your way. This will open the door and allow you to proceed and enter The Gilded Perch.
Move the sun statue towards the door, then pull it slightly to the right, and pull the green moon statue towards Darren, such that each shines it's light on the moonstone and the sigils behind them.
